Vocab Directions

ENG 9H
                               *MONTHLY VOCABULARY ASSIGNMENT*
Select five* words from a current reading assignment.  Choose words that are unfamiliar to you and be sure to select words of the English Language (not something from a specific science, for example).  Be sure to include the appropriate MLA citation for each word.  The assignment is divided into two parts, detailed below.
-[Part One]-
First, define the word and label the part of speech as it is used in context.  Next, identify both a synonym and antonym for the word.  Include the quote in which the word is used with appropriate MLA citation.  Explain the relationship of the word to a specific literary element (theme, characterization, symbolism, metaphor, allusion, setting, etc.).  A literary element may be used up to three times per assignment.  Finally, explain the significance of that specific word to the context (this will often be closely tied to the literary element discussed).
-[Sample Format for Part One]-
1.  word (part of speech): definition

synonym:             antonym:
“context quote” (author’s last name & page #).
analysis/discussion (about a paragraph in length)
____________________________________________________________
-[Part Two]-
For the second portion of this assignment take the five words from above and write an original piece using each word correctly.  The form of the word and the part of speech may vary from the context in Part One as long as it is used appropriately and accurately [be sure to highlight the words and label part of speech].  This original work may take any shape* including: poetry, dialogue, narrative, serial, etc.  This portion of the assignment will be graded on overall spelling, punctuation, accuracy, context, tone, and meaning.
